Mark Twain

Samuel Clemens is considered to be one of the best humorists writers in American history. Clemens wrote several pieces, which portrayed life in America. By using his knowledge of America he was able to create life-like characters and situations on those he observed on his adventures (Henderson). This enables Clemens to write humorous pieces in which his readers are able to relate to. Samuel used the nature/culture along the Mississippi River in many different stories. Also, he uses exaggeration in order to add humor to his stories. Most of Clemens' works pertain to an environment along the mighty river because this is what he knows and is comfortable with. Since he traveled the Mississippi River he is able to base most of his characters off what he saw. This allows the people of the nature/culture to find humor in his stories, whereas someone from Russia might not see the humor in it because they aren't familiar with the ways of those parts."I wouldn't think nuffn; I'd take en bust him over de head-dat is, if he warn't white. I wouldn't 'low no nigger to call me dat." This is a line taken from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which shows how Clemens uses dialect in his stories. This might not have been funny to the people o

The excitement in knowing that his frog was going to be the best jumping frog and then the disappointment he felt when his frog didn't jump. Then it is up to the gullibility of the listener as well of the reader to believe what the reader is saying (Wonham). There were so many men competing to have a better story than the other. One can picture in their minds the events unfolding and like any other person laugh about it because a man actually thought his frog would jump farther than any other frog and then the frog didn't even move. As Bemis tells the story of the buffalo chasing him and climbing trees, the readers can actually see the images in their minds creating the image of a cartoon. By using the culture of the Mississippi, Clemens is able to write several yarns: Baker's Blue Jay Yarn, Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras, and many more in Roughing It. Many of Samuel's characters come from a lower class, which also helps with the humor (Zwig). As with all tall tales, they are told with certain energy, but most importantly they are told with a straight face. These characters had emotion and dealt with everyday situations, and because of these characters Clemens became one of the best and well-known humorist writer in American history. A good example of this would be The Notorious Jumping Frog of the Calaveras County. As one reads the story, many people can actually relate to the characters. By the time Twain is done with the yarn, his readers have a clear reconciliation of the event.
