Yugoslavia
"Throughout history, the Balkans have been a crossroads, zone of endless military, cultural, and economic mixing and clashing between Europe and Asia, Christianity and Islam, Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Subject to violent shifts of borders, rulers and belief systems at the hands of the world's greatest empires- the Balkans are often called Europe's tinderbox and a seething cauldron of ethnic and religious resentments." This paper will discuss some of the geographical, ethnic and political influences that caused the geographical boundaries of the former Yugoslavia to change from 1900 to 2003. The first section of this paper discusses some of the geographical features of the Balkan region and the influences they may have had on the history and evolution of Yugoslavia. The second section will discuss the actual evolution and changes of the former Yugoslavia from 1900 through 2003. From this the reader will gain a fuller understanding of some of the factors behind the continued and long-standing unrest in this part of the world.Over the course of history many writers and scholars attributed the almost continuous fighting, bloodshed and ever-shifting borders of the B
Slovenia and then Croatia were the first to break away but only at the cost of renewed conflict with Serbia. Many Croats in particular would have preferred independence and resentment led to Alexander's violent death in 1934. The international community, while supporting greater autonomy, opposed the Kosovar Albanians' demand for independence. The Serbs still dominated the government, which combined with an authoritarian monarchy gave rise to an anti-Serb movement. Slobodan Milosevic lost a presidential election in 2000. To the west, the Italian peninsula is only forty miles across the Adriatic from Albania thus explaining the close ties of Albanian culture to Roman and Italian influences. In Serbia the two provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina were given independent status. It is no surprise that it is one of the few places in the world where three of the world's oldest religions intersect head-on: Islam, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Roman Catholicism. Muslims were driven from their homes in carefully planned operations that become known as 'ethnic cleansing'. The presence of UN peacekeepers to contain the situation proved ineffective. Later in the war, the Serbs turned against the Bulgarians, their former ally, and occupied what was south of Serbia and all of what is now Kosovo as well as Macedonia. This becomes evident as we now turn to discussing the evolution of Yugoslavia during the early 1900's when nationalism swept the world. This was contained by NATO peacekeepers and ultimately resolved by political means* Conclusions - Suggestions for solving their problem or summarize what you think root of their problems are and can they go forward in peace? Might want to list all the negative impacts besides death and destruction that such fighting causes and possibilities for this region if they got their act together. Kosovo was occupied by Albanian and Italian troops whilst the Bulgarians invaded Macedonia seen in figure 4.
