Finally "Queer" is a story that describes the psychological abuse that cause people to do thing they will regret to prove a point to themselves. Throughout the story the author describes how Elmer felt isolated, and rejected because he was different. Sherwood character Elmer was a person who never really had friends even before they move to the city from the country "When we lived out here it was different; I worked and at night I went to bed and slept; I wasn't seeing people and thinking as I am now" Elmer felt that before moving to the city people did not know him so there was nothing to say about him or for him to think about this quote shows the isolation of Elmer when they were living in the country before moving to the city. He also realized that no one could ever be happy without friend by quoting "He was, he felt, on condemned to go through life without frien
Throughout the story Elmer wanted to make to friend with people within the city but did not know how to initiate the conversation because he felt that he was different "Everyone stands around and laughs and they talk but they say nothing to me, then I feel so queer that I can't talk either; I go away" this quote represent that Elmer would love to fit in with the people in his town but psychologically he feels that they do not want anything to do with him and his family because they are different. Finally "Queer" is a story that describes the psychological abuse that cause people to do thing they will regret to prove a point to themselves. Sherwood used many images to describe the loneliness that Elmer faced by not having friend "With the shoes in his hand he sat looking at a large hole in the heel of one of his stocking (1st paragraph)" this represent the emptiness of Elmer life ". His fathers wore a Prince Albert coat that he had for many years that was cover with grease spot and have become brown with age. He also felt that his father added to the way they was viewed within their society because of the way he dressed and the way he conducted business with the salesmen that came into town. The story shows us how refusing to accept those who are different from us prevent us from developing meaningful relationships. Elmer felt that running away will solve his problems because he will be in a new city where people do not know his background by quoting "He would get work in some shop and become friends with the other workmen and would be indistinguishable, then he could talk and laugh; he would no longer be queer and would make friends" Elmer felt that a new beginning would heal the pain of not being accepted and he would not be label queer anymore. d and he hated the thought" Elmer wanted to be accept within the his society but was never giving the chance. Throughout the story class plays a big part in their culture and how they are viewed within society. All of these factors played a part in how Elmer was scar mentally and why he made some of his bad decision "He took a cheep revolver from the case and began to wave it about" Elmer was at his breaking point of being used and laughed at in his city. Elmer felt because his father wore this jacket people looked at him differently which had a psychological strain on the way his family was viewed. Elmer and his father felt that people was getting over on them by selling them products that people did not want and braded to other traveling salesmen about the purchase this did not allow them to build relationships with their vendors or around the city. Elmer and his family were viewed as a joke in the city because no one respected them as individual or salesmen everyone laughed at them and no one ever got to know them in the city. Mentally Elmer felt that he had proving to himself that he was no different than anyone else by attacking George but deep down inside knew that he could never change who he is and what he stand for by running away from his problem in the city.
