Henry VIII
Born at Greenwich on the 28th January 1491, he was the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Henry VIII was a controversial king. Many people loved, respected, feared or hated him. This essay will investigate the evidence for and against him before deciding whether he was a good or bad king. We must remember that people had very different views to such questions back in the sixteenth century.We have a lot of evidence about Henry. Many portraits have been found of him. Some when he was young & fit, and some when he was old & fat. Here are 2 portraits of him at different ages: - Other evidence of Henry VIII were the written documents. One example would be the SP1's, they are papers of miscellaneous public and private letters in date order. Henry loved collecting things, which is why at one point in his life he had accumulated over 50 castles and palaces. Many modern films have been made showing Henrys life. Some portray him as a loving man changing his country for the better, others portray him as a wicked money waster who had a fetish for chopping peoples heads off.
He was always raising his taxes, so he could purchase more war weapons and armour etc, although he often squandered the Treasury funds on junk. To get rid of them, he said that they weren't following the three rules that all monks and nuns were supposed to follow. Henry took the advice of two men, Thomas Cromwell and Thomas Cranmer. Another of his many talents was his ability to speak many languages. He did some good things that changed his country for the better and some things that changed his country for the worse. Jane was the daughter of one of the King's knights. He has been described as a most handsome man, who was tall with broad shoulders, strong athletic limbs and a fair complexion which all added to his popularity with his subjects. Henry wanted to get rid of Anne and in his mind there was only one way. It is for this reason, and probably this reason alone that Henry VIII has become one of our most important & memorable historical figures. This was very, very unfair of Henry as he had many other lovers and no one ever beheaded him for it. Ouch! In 1536, after Henry had declared himself ruler of the English Churches, he decided to dissolve the monasteries because the nuns and monks were loyal to the Pope and he feared they would not obey his orders. Catherine Howard Catherine ParrWhilst Henry was King, England went from being Catholic to Protestant. Henry VIII enjoyed many physically challenging sports, some of his favorites were jousting and wrestling. In October 1529 Henry removed him as chancellor, along with all the other honors and privileges that had been given him, except the title of Archbishop of York. His fifth wife, Catherine Howard, was the reason he divorced Anne of Cleeves.
