capitalof the new mass culture

Coney Island was known as the unofficial capital of the new mass culture. The new mass culture attracted many artists, writers and critics. Artists such as Italian born Joseph Stella painted Coney Island's Mardi Gras and other attractions. Stella was inspired by the Italian futurist movement and French Cubism which he included in his paintings. "Battle of Lights, Mardi Gras, Coney Island" was one of his drawings of the Mardi Gras carnival. The Mardi Gras carnival was a special post-Labor Day celebration, which was celebrated almost like the French holiday was. Stella's painting had an explosion of colors shapes, emotions and sensations. New ideas and ideals were developed in our modern society in places such as Coney Island. It was no longer a special place to visit which made many tourists veer to new places. This type of directed activity would help for the future of the United States according to Gulick. Most critics were swept away by the enjoyment of the crowds when they first stepped foot in Coney Island. A new type of culture was founded in Coney Island. The anti-Coney Island critics thought that it was a disgrace to human civilization. Marsh's paintings were very distinct because of the way he made the women in his paintings seductive and casual. The main goals for these new places were to keep organization while having fun. People were no longer uptight, but were friendly and open to new experiences. Huneker saw the fall of value and conduct in Coney Island to be shifting to a new mass culture of unorganized people. The play movement was targeted towards children. Children were supported to be involved in "directed play", which was the opposite of Coney's ideals of free play.
