             In the time of Old Babylonia the ancient people were ruled by the king's law. In early Mesopotamia this law was called the Code of Hammurabi. When we study the code we can take a look at "what sort of society we see reflected" in it. The answer is not that simple. There are many different aspects in the society we see as a result of Hammurabi's code.
             One of the first aspects of society we can look at is that the King is trying to take an interest into protecting the rights of his people. We see that Hammarubi was concerned with justice and equality. In the opening passage of the code we get a hint to this "to cause justice to prevail the land, to destroy the wicked and the evil, to prevent the strong from oppressing the weak, to go forth like the sun over the black-headed people, to enlighten the land and to further the welfare of the people." This tells us that there is a society present at this point in time where the king wants to take care of, and better his subjects.
             When we also take a step back and look at the code we see a society that is harsh in the enforcement of the law. When someone commits a crime is more than likely capital punishment, rather than a slap on the wrist. As an example Hammurabi law number 3 says that if you lie in court, and are caught, you are to be put to death. Law number 22 says that if you are caught stealing, you are to be put to death. We also see the harshness of the law in the section of personal injury and manslaughter. If a son hit his father there is no excuse or way out, the son will have his hands chopped off. It seems that the punishments are set up in an "eye for an eye" type of society. This harshness that is present in Mesopotamia is used as a deterrent for further action.
