Atkins Diet

             As the general public grows more and more infatuated with the idea of weight loss, the question on many peoples' mind seems to be: Are these new "phenomenon" diets really worth trying and can they be unfavorable to ones health? There are several diet fads in the market these days but the most popular one seems to be the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet is based on eating no or few carbohydrates and in doing so the dieter consumes high levels of protein. To most people this may seem absurd to eat fat and cut out all of the healthy vegetables that ones body needs. Although some of these diets may help, the safest diet is to eat sensible and maintain a proper exercise program.
             The Atkins diet is a ketogenic diet. This type of diet focuses on only protein use, which means the dieter cannot eat anything with sugar or carbohydrates. Eating only protein allows for a rapid reduction of calories and rapid weight loss. High carbohydrate meals tend to leave you less satisfied than those that contain adequate fat levels, so you eat more and get hungrier sooner. Following the Atkins diet will help people burn fat for energy, stop hunger in between meals and improve overall health, the Atkins diet website asserted. According to Ellen Coleman a registered dietician "The initial rapid weight loss associated with the Atkins Diet is primarily due to excessive water loss." (Coleman, 1). The water loss occurs because of the strict limitation of carbohydrates that cause the liver and muscle glycogen depletion As a result the kidney is unable to concentrate urine and could cause damage.
             Another massive downfall to this form of diet is the loss of important vitamins and minerals. The inventor of the Atkins Diet said, "The Atkins Diet is certainly unbalanced" (Atkins, 316).
