Beliefs, Attitudes, and Values

of all, a belief, by definition, is "cognition that something exists or is true." (Sereno) In other words, it is a perception or acceptance of a person, an object, or a thing as being valid and true. According to Rokeach, there are hundreds of thousands of beliefs that a person can have, because a person can create his or her own beliefs on almost anything in the world. However, he also distinguishes them into two categories, which are central and peripheral. Peripheral beliefs are beliefs on external things that do not affect or involve the person directly. Peripheral beliefs most often deal with physical things such as attractiveness of a specific outfit. Central beliefs, on the other hand, are beliefs on something that directly affects or is directly related to the person. (Sereno) Therefore, believing that God exists and that Jesus Christ is the Savior would be a central belief. Rokeach says that central beliefs are more significant and have greater lasting impact on the person, because they are what actually matters to the person. This same reason, however, is also what makes central beliefs more difficult to change than peripheral beliefs. For example, it would take a lot more effort to convince a person to change his or her religious beliefs than to change a person's choice of outfit. However, once a person changes his or her religious beliefs, it also influences all the other beliefs that he/she had that were related to his/her religious beliefs and eventually have a greater impact on the person. (Rokeach, 1968)
