Beloved: A Casebook of Unders

In reading a number of responses to Toni Morrison's Beloved in Beloved: A Casebook, one is offered the chance at seeing the book, once again after the initial reading, broken down further by the minds of others. Through various authors, we are brought to a heightened understanding of the book. Also, by understanding what others have interpreted from the story, we gain other perspectives, as well. In a reading by Ashraf H. A. Rushdy entitled Daughters of Signifyin(g) History: The Example of Toni Morrison's Beloved, the author describes what remembering does to Sethe. "Memory (the deliberate act of remembering) is a form of willed creation. It is not an effort to find out the way it really way-that is research. The point is not to dwell on the way it appeared and why it appeared in that particular way" (37). When taking this into context, one may ask about the way Sethe and Paul D. remember the past, the way they bring up Sweet Home, and even the way the story is told. If one is not to dwell on the way it was, the things that happened in the past, then it is very ironic that the story unfolds in exerpts of memories. I believe what Sethe and Paul D. are trying to do is to recreate their past at Sweet Home, if only to be ab

She seems to be replacing the lost love of her former child, also named Beloved, with this stranger. She is the same age the child would have been and also knows information about Sethe that she would not have otherwise known. At first, even without discussing it, all three of the characters believe that Beloved is indeed the child Sethe has murdered. By reading what others felt and how they interpreted the story, our understanding of the novel is heightened and we are offered more insight into the novel, as well. , to accept this child into her home and heart. However, it is only through remembering that this is possible. Had he not showed up on her front porch, Sethe would only have thought of Beloved and Sweet Home and her years in slavery in the nightmares that visited her daily and also by the spirit of Beloved, the haunter of 124. The middle passage journey, the hard work and labor, the unexplainably horrid treatment, and now trying to fit back into society. Although Denver seems to be acting selfish, it goes to show that Sethe has certain obstacles that she needs to overcome before she can forget, and Denver's attitude seems to be pushing her forward into her future life. The way that Denver feels is also symbolic on many levels. She cannot stand to hear her mother discuss Sweet Home and her past in slavery mainly because neither one involves herself. Eventually, we see Beloved's character grow and she comes to represent all of the slaves, everywhere.
