A Presentation of the Not So Present
To recognize a balance between gratification and conflict and gather it into one emotion establishes a relationship of pleasures. William Wordsworth acknowledges these sentiments merely by a visit to a childhood locale, a recollection of the past, and even a blessedness of his breath. The unconstrained language is collectively powered by nature. Horace Walpole's use of vivid imagery and uncultivated type of new fiction are afar from the tranquility that Wordsworth cherishes. Unlike a real and pure peace within, the gothic realm offers an intense, superficial feeling that takes place anywhere but in nature. The supernatural relies on a "horror of the spectacle" (Walpole 19) to create intensity. Wordsworth applies the facets within nature to encompass the real spiritual presence, and rejects the idea of imaginatively hatched fear, when it takes away from the transcendental visions he finds so inspiring.

Poems by Wordsworth are stimulated by a focus on the abstract, a focus so evocative it becomes so valuable that it should remain untouched. Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto establishes a sense of terror and anxious enchantment by imagination as well, but it does not derive from the purest form. The fear and sorrow are not developed from reminiscence or memory, but from a plot created with melancholy and the paranormal in mind. Manfred's affliction for his son is created not from his own subjective, but when he "beheld his child dashed to pieces, and almost buried under an enormous helmet, an hundred times more large than any casque ever made for human being, and shaded with a proportionable quantity of black feathers." (Walople 19).
