Dictatorship
In modern times, no dictator can take total power by force alone. In order to gain support, they must offer something beneficial to the people. Unfortunately what is thought to be beneficial can be extremely harmful and cruel. Three specific dictators during the World War II period were Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin. Joseph Stalin was the successor of Lenin after his death. He had only one goal and that was to finish what Lenin had started. Basically that was to build a classless society in which the means of production were in the hands of the people. After Stalin established power, he developed new goals to make the Soviet Union a leader in industry. He wanted to get rid of Russia's backwardness. For this reason Stalin proposed several "five year plans." These plans were aimed at improving industry and economic growth. He developed a command economy, which meant government made all economic decisions. Under Stalin, the government controlled all businesses. Stalin also took agriculture under control of the government. He forced people to give up their privately owned land and live on government-owned farms or on large farms that were owned and operated by groups, also known as collectives. On the election of September 14th, 1930 the Nazi's got about eighteen percent of the votes. World War Two started in 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland. In 1929, during The Great Depression Hitler knew that the people of Germany were desperate for a new leader. Hitler took over Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938-1939 and made his military big enough to go to war. The government feared Mussolini and hoped he would abandon his violent techniques if he were to be brought into office. They also received about 107 seats in the third German Reich. Hitler had got as high as he could and reached his goal of power. In October of 1922, the king formally invited Mussolini into power as the new prime minister. Political enemies were arrested and thousands were locked up and tortured. In order for many dictators in the past to gain power, they exploited people by using their fears against them. Taking advantage of the chaotic state, Mussolini offered industrialists and landlords the services of his gangs. On November 9th, 1923 Hitler and his Nazi's went to Munich and tried to take it over. Shortly after he was expelled from the socialist party due to his change of views. In the presidential election on March 13th, 1932 Hitler received about 30 percent of the votes, while the current president received 49 percent of the votes. During the "March on Rome," where fascists moved towards the capital, the king was convinced not to take actions of force and remove them.
