In less than 60 years, the American cosmetic industry has evolved from bathtub and garage operation to a big business seducing teens. Women who didn't make their own had two choices: they could go to a pharmacist who compounded preparations under a "house" label or purchase commercial products. Many people in the early 1900 began to think not only prostitutes wore makeup, but also girls living the "fast life". To most Americans in the 18th century, the painted woman was simply a prostitute who advertised her job through rouge and kohl. A lot of people believe that women who were makeup are not what they seem. For instance, some use cosmetics everyday while others use them because they are clowns or actors. Most women preferred white powder to achieve the desired look. Today, past styles are adored but the natural look is very big.
