             An exploration and critical assessment of the life, ministry and teaching of Martin Luther King?
             "Once perceived by the authorities as a rebel, Martin Luther King had now been embraced as an American hero. In 1983 Congress decided that the third Monday in January would be celebrated as King Day" (Peter Ling)
             Martin Luther King devoted his life to fighting racism. He gave many speeches during his lifetime. The most famous speech was "I Have a Dream". Many people thought he was a hero Symbol to all black people and a fighter for freedom to all mankind. To understand Dr King's work I need to shed some light on the concept and history of racism.
             Martin Luther King realizes that slavery was the reason why black people were treated so badly. Slavery began in Egypt around 1500 BC. However it occurred again in the 1600's, where people in Africa were kidnapped and taken on ships to Jamaica, Barbados and U.S.A, where they were sold for money. The people who bought the slaves in America then used them on plantations and in the home as maids and servants.
             This was tiring work and they were treated badly. If they were ever disobedient, then their usual punishment was to be whipped. Sometimes it was lashed over the victim 100 times or more.
             An English man named John Newton helped to abolish slave trade. He was once a slave trader himself but later realized that slavery was wrong:
             "If the trade is carried on...the blood of many thousands of our helpless, much injured fellow creatures will be crying against us."
             A few people wanted to abolish slavery, but many were not convinced. This disagreement took place more in America than anywhere else. There was confrontation between The Northern and Southern states of America. The Northern states wanted to get rid of slavery while the Southern stats wanted to keep it.
