Communicative Approach
The Communicative approach took its place in foreign language teaching when Grammar Translation, Audio-Lingual approaches and language laboratories were no longer considered as satisfactory approaches in language learning. "In these methods the learners have had no control over the contents of the program, nor over the way are the lessons delivered." This dissatisfaction caused linguists and teachers to analyze the learner's needs to involve them in the language they are learning more actively. The Communicative approach aimed to help learners to be able to communicate more effectively by using appropriate language, gestures and expressions in certain situations. . In general communicative approach is not only composed of grammar, phonology and vocabulary but everything which can be needed in communicative situations. Margie S. Berns, an exp
(1984) Initiatives in communicative language teaching. Pair or group work has an important role in student-centred classroom in order to interact independently of the teacher. ert in the field of communicative language teaching, writes in explaining Firth's view that "language is interaction; it is interpersonal activity and has a clear relationship with society. Instead of being passive in using the target language, learners are encouraged more and secured to express their opinions, feelings in discussions, presentations. html In this approach the teacher uses daily-life situations as a tool to make learner's language competences actively involved in the classroom. htm> (accessed 1 March 2004)Books:BERNS, M. Instead of a teacher-centred lesson, learners take the responsibility of learning. Because both of these realities are so complex and poorly understood, nobody will ever produce a definitive teaching methodology. To sum up, in communicative approach a good progress can only be made if learners are well motivated and have an opportunity to express their ideas as well as provided 'whole-task practise' by their teacher.
