social model of disability

When looking at the medical model of disability it is easy to find minor flaws. One of the best critiques of the medical model is the social model of disability which not only exposes the flaws but improves upon the flaws. In the following paragraphs I will explain the medical model and social model and than explain how the social model critiques the medical model and I'll give my opinions on both and how each model relates to my life in some way. The medical model is based on scientific research and views. The problem is within the body of the person and there is something wrong with that person. People with a disability in the medical model assume the patient. This is a role that may be short term or long term depending on many factors such as that persons condition, policies related to institutionalization and community supports, and professnial and social attitudes about the given disability (1). Meaning, there is a lot of room for bias. But usually, the medical model applies to the majority in a positive way. Some of the worst practices for the medical model are as follows: During the Holocaust people with disabilities were systemitically exteminated and were the subjects of creul medical experiments during the

A few months ago I sprained my ankle and was forced to be on crutches for a week. Also, in some dorms, there are no ramps, just stairs, so a wheel chair bound student would be disabled in many respects on this campus. I have been effected by the social model as well. Recently when I had my foot X-rayed the doctors assumed I could walk to where I needed to go, thinking I was fine because my foot appeared fine on the outside when in fact, it turned out my ankle was sprained. Impairment is an injury, illness that either causes or is likely to cause a change in a persons physical appearance or something that limits a persons ability to function within. I have seen the medical model personally effect people before. Also, the past can be a barrier (5). Going down the stairs everytime I had to go to lunch or class was a pain in the neck but nessecary since my dorm lacked an elevator. Other times, they fail to give you proper medicine or don't give you anything, assuming your aches and pains are nothing more than growing pains. Three years later he was misdignosed as being mentally retarded and was enrolled in the Willowbrook School. On the other hand, subjects like math would send him into hyper drive, literally within seconds. Positive advancements in the medical model include breakthroughs in the biomedical and technological sciences and clinical applications have saved lives and extended the lives of people living with disabilities (4). Manevuring yourself off your crutches into the shower which was a foot off the ground proved difficult on numerous occasions. With more than 6,000 kids, Willowbrook was a typical understaffed 70s institutuion built to handle the mentally challanged kids. A persons past, in this case, being in a poor or rich family, will effect job oppurtunities and social treatment.
