             (B) Compare these poems with two more poems, one by Carol Ann Duffy and one from the pre-1914 poetry bank.
             Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 is a poem in which he forms an argument against conventions to flatter one's lover with admiration of her beauty. As well as making comments about the way that love between two people can be expressed and interpreted. He uses the example of a woman who is not physically perfect to emphasise that love is deeper and more important than these superficial comparisons. While his mistress may not have had silky hair and sweet breath, he is still completely obsessed by her and considers his love to be as rare as any other.
             Similarly Havisham by Carol Ann Duffy is also about love but unlike Sonnet 130 Havisham is describing the hate for a man Miss Havisham once loved. This poem is a monologue spoken by Miss Havisham, a character in Dickens' Great Expectations. Jilted by her scheming fiancé, she continues to wear her wedding dress and sit amid the remains of her wedding breakfast for the rest of her life, while she plots revenge on all men.
             There are a variety of language techniques employed by Shakespeare to emphasise his feeling of love. The most obvious of these is the interesting choice of words. Rose petals are soft, almost silky to the touch, pleasant to look at and have perfect shades of colour 'But no such roses in her cheeks'. Shakespeare uses these words to conjure up several the image of a not so perfect woman. By using 'goddess' to compare his mistress, the author again heightens the effect of the poem, as his love is an earthly love and not a bogus exaggerated description like other sonnets.
