Expansion of Green
The expansion of T.F. Green Airport has been a widely discussed topic ever since 1997. T.F. Green as of today has a runway of 7,200 feet and there are plans in the works to extend this runway to 9,500 feet in the near future. In order to open this airport up for international and coast to coast travel the main runway needs to be extended at least 2,300 feet. This lengthening of the runway would require the moving of both Airport Road and Main Avenue as well as the condeming of over 360 houses. This propsosal has caused many problems throughout the city of Warwick and there has been much talk of how to keep both the residents of Warwick and bussiness's happy. Two airport consultants Landrum and Brown have proposed three plans for the airport expansion. The intial proposal in 1997 was going to take 20 years to complete, but recent studies reveal that the airport needs to be expanded immediatly. "Current market conditions, industry changes and bussiness demands have casued us to reevaluate our runway options." says Brown. Just recently Landum and Brown had came up with three more expansion proposals. Hopefully one of which would satisfy Mayor Avedisian and the city council. However Mayor Avedisian criticized each plan becasu
The VLAP offers owneres of property in noise affected areas an opportunity to sell their property and leave the area. Clinker told the Airport Corporation that they would face "massive litigation and lawsuits with respect to people's health. Residents of Warwick such as Robert Jackson have taken full advantage of one of the VLAP programs. The mayor of Elk Grove, Craig Johnson also disapproves of the airport expansion just as Mayor Avedisian does in Warwick, RI. " if they didnt plan on running a city-wide health study. "Just how much they want to carve up the community is hard to tell becasue once again, Chicago doesn't believe in being forthcoming. I fully understand the passion of the people living near the airport in their objection to its noise and other intrusions in thier life. Citizens of both Warwick and Cranston thought they had won the expansion battle. Mayor Avedisian criticized these plans by saying, "Thy're again proposing major breaks in cohesive neighborhoods that would create extensive tracks of fallow property and dead-end streets. Interestingly in Kent County, the county which would be most affected by the expansion 71% of those polled were in favor of the expansion of the airport(Hagan 1).
