Conflicts in Antigone
Today I will talk about the conflicts that are contained in Jean Anouilh's drama "Antigone", including how they are produced and why they are so significant for their impact on the tragedy.Throughout the play, Antigone is constantly struggling between her personal beliefs and society's view on political nature. This is shown in the dispute over the burial of Polynices, which initiates all the conflicts within the drama. Antigone, Ismene, and Creon are the three characters that come into conflict with other characters and themselves. However, almost all of these conflicts are caused by Antigone, either directly or indirectly. The first conflict that is introduced to us is between Antigone and Ismene. Through the conversation between them, we can feel that Antigone possesses a deep love for her family. She is so firm in her beliefs about the proper honouring of her brothers life and she is prepared to defy the law in doing so. On page 10 and 11, when Ismene refuses to help Antigone in burying their brother, "Creon will have us put to death". Antigone answers resolutely, "Of course he will. That's what he's here for. He will do what he has to do, and we will do what we have to do. He is bound to put us to death. We are bound to
Because none of them is willing to or able to compromise. " Death is nothing to her; all she cares is what she wants. " By saying this, Antigone has put Ismene in a difficult position; using the words like "have" and "bound" she makes it clear that it is Ismene's obligation to bury their brother, no matter what the outcome will be. He asks her on page 28 "is this true?" from here we can tell that Creon is meant to save Antigone, although he knows clearly what the truth is. Her reaction has put Ismene into a moral dilemma where inner conflict is developed within her. And the way one reacts to the conflict will determine his/her life, either to a happy one or a tragedy. And how can you persuade some one that is not even afraid of death? The only way out is to agree. Whereas Creon emphasizes on his responsibility and duty to the society, even though he might have to do what he does not want to. She is selfish towards her sister, and she does not care what Ismene feels or fears. " This reflects that her obedient personality is conflicting with her personal will. But again, Antigone's personality fails her. He plans to offer her a way out even though he might have to kill the guards in order to seal truth.
