             It is essential to have motivated and productive employees in every workplace. Stress, communication issues, and outrageous changes in organizations are taking their toll, increasing workplace dissatisfaction, and decreasing employee motivation. Employees feel used up. That is why leaders need to focus at least as much on human beings and values as they do on systems and processes. The critical question here is how to motivate employees. Does the old "Kick In The Ass" (KITA) theory motivate employees, or is it a combination of "hygiene" and motivation as theorized by Frederick Herzberg (1959). In the late 1950s, Frederick Herzberg theorized that employee satisfaction two dimensions: "hygiene" and motivation. Hygiene issues such as supervision and salary increased employee satisfaction at work, while motives such as recognition and achievement made workers more productive, creative, and committed. Herzberg (1959) went on and developed his theory that hygiene issues could not motive employees but could minimize dissatisfaction. Motivators, on the other hand, create satisfaction by fulfilling individuals' needs for meaning and personal growth. His theory was that without the hygiene factors being in place, the motivators were just another "kick in the ass" or KITA, and that while the intentions of KITA were good, they were not a long-term solution.
             To apply Herzberg's theory, an employer must begin with the hygiene issues. Even though the hygiene issues are not the source of employee satisfaction, hygiene issues must be dealt with first to create a employee environment that fosters the greatest satisfaction and motivation. Hygiene issues include company and administrative policies, supervision, salary, interpersonal relations, and working conditions.
