Gatsby
Many people have heard of, but do not know the truth about Gatsby, which is most likely what he anticipated. He hosts elaborate parties but is never about to be seen. He has great fortunes, but the mystery of where he got it from is still uncertain. Who is Gatsby and what is his business in the West Egg, and why does he choose to be so inexplicable? The mystery of Gatsby's wealth is obscure to most, but several have ideas to how this came about. Tom Buchanan, well known ex-polo player suggests that Gatsby is involved with illegal liquor/drug stores; whilst in a dispute with Gatsby Tom says "He and Wolfsheim bought up at lot of side-street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter." It is also rumoured that college Wolfsheim rigged the
With so many unanswered questions, it is curious that even though so many people attended his parties few, if any actually know him. And it is made obvious that Gatsby intentionally tries to avoid unwelcome attention to himself when Lucille says "when I was here last I tore my gown on a chair, and he asked me my name and address - inside of a week I got a package from Croirer's with a new evening gown in it" Though Gatsby holds all these parties, has all this wealth and lives the high life, it is interesting that only one person, Nick, makes an appearance at Gatsby's funeral. The women were corrected when Lucille agued "he was a German spy during the war". The society will remain uninformed of the legitimacy concerning his wealth, past and associates. At one of Jay Gatsby's numerous parties Jordan found in conversation with two other women, another rumour of Gatsby's past. Nick states "I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited". However it is acknowledged that Gatsby was a successful participant in the American side of world war one. It seems as though Gatsby will remain a mystery until the closing stages. It was said that Gatsby once killed a man. Apart from Gatsby's unexplained path to wealth, the question still remains about his history. It appears that Gatsby's desire to live sheltered from the world around him was accomplished. It seems only one of three (Nick, Daisy and Wolfsheim) who are the only people who discover the true Gatsby are prepared to show respect for him in the end. Gatsby claims that he inherited his riches from an employer when he worked on boats in his earlier days.
