Fuel Essay

After the Terrorist attacks on 9-11 many fans looked to Fuel for solace, that's when innocent because a big hit with many people as it represents so many different things as well as the sorrow felt for the victims of the 9-11 attacks. To me the song has another meaning; it resembles the feelings of many teenagers and young adolescents who wish to be free from the pressures of the world. Some of which are just trying to get away from controlling parents or some who just aren't ready to face the world as an adult. As the song has been questioned in its meaning by many fans there is no one answer, some believe the song has some association with the death of River Phoenix, In the music video for Innocent, multiple times pictures of River Phoenix are s

It is believed that Carl Bell wrote the song about the pressures of life relating to the death of River Phoenix. (River Phoenix died of a drug overdose) When Carl Bell was asked personally what he thought the song meant he replied. I believe that this song does a good job of showing that. When the song says, "Never did we know/What the future would hold/Or that we'd be bought and sold/When we were innocent," It reminds me of someone who is young, in high school, someone who is carefree and innocent. "The song is based on being young, not realizing what's coming up in your life, and not anticipating how things are going to be when you get there. " The song to me has a strong meaning of teenagers, young kids who want to live their lives and be free, but have to face many pressures in life such as their parents. This song has a great meaning and has touched many people, and I believe that Carl Bell intended the song to do so when he wrote it. But has everyone telling them they have to know what they are going to do with their life, they have to get ready for the real world, but when your 16 that stuff just doesn't register. Many teenagers and others face many of the same pressures from their jobs, school, and their family's and they just want to escape it all in the middle of the night to have fun, to be who they really are. The song can give the idea of a teenager sneaking out at night to have fun with his or her friends because during the day their life is too controlled by their parents to have any fun. Such as a kid who's parents may be trying to live his or her life thru their kids by deciding a career for them, choosing their friends, their school, and planning their whole life for them even if its not what the kid wants. In today's society the pressures that can be forced upon someone are tremendous, whether it's the pain of someone's death such as River Phoenix, the sorrow for the victims of 9-11, or just the everyday pressures of life and preparing as an adolescent to go out into the "real world".
