Consequences of the civil war
The time following the civil war was hard for the South economically. However they were not the only ones who were having problems. The only difference is that other parts of the United States were very prosperous. One major issue, no matter what part of the country you worked in, was labor. With the emancipation of the slaves after the Civil War, the South attempted to maintain their dominance of the blacks with the instatement of the black codes. The speed of planting and harvesting was greatly increased. A farmer had to keep up with the latest technological advancement in farming if he wanted to make any type of profit. The black codes returned the Blacks to their pre emancipation days. Cheep land was purchased from the Mexicans, and agriculture was ironically the first big business in California. After a number of victories in 1880 the Knights of Labor received its first female member. In Iowa they represented black coal all black coal miners and showed tolerance to all working men. Especially on the use of the Chinese. Farmers had to be careful not to become chained to a one crop economy. However the Knights of Labor frowned heavily on the use of foreign labor. Te black codes gave Negro's their basic rights such as marriage but banned them form serving on a jury and voting. In the post civil war era groups like the Knights of Labor were founded. Furthermore if a Negro was found idle on the job he could be rented out to a chain gang.
