During my past internship experiences, I had the opportunity to identify my skills in the Communications industry and moreover, discovered my interests. My interest in public relations started as I improved my interpersonal and writing skills. I gained hands on experience in a media outlet, CNN, where I was introduced to the inner workings of a network. During that time, I monitored and participated in relationships between the media and Marketing Communications, whether it was PR agents or advertisers. Prior to CNN, I assisted account management in Cen Advertising Agency, in Istanbul, who is acquired by Grey WW. Through brainstorming sessions and working with the account team, I developed a strong idea of a traditional advertising agency.
I want to explore the strategies integrated and adapt skills that are essential to the practice, as well as experience the teamwork that is inherent in PR. As an intern, I am hoping to get involved in the brainstorming sessions where I can contribute from my own background and knowledge. My first work experience was in Marketing and Sales Division of W. It is a crucial concept that is relevant to any aspect of communications because the main focus of every business is "to drive sales". It was one of the most rewarding experiences I could have for a start because I had the chance to learn about how to generate sales and market products before everything else. I want to get involved in pitching media coverage, writing press releases and overall, improve skills in building relationships with the gatekeepers in the media. As a world wide firm, Weber Shandwick has a global stand in the market and as a person exposed to different cultures and understandings, I can align myself with the same approach and values. Through my experience in Weber Shandwick, I hope not only to construct a better understanding of public relations but also have hands on experience. Having been on the other side of the liaison, in a media outlet like CNN and having adapted concepts of marketing and branding in the advertising realm, I eventually developed a career path that is directed towards Public Relations. I am also thrilled about the assigned project on a real client: that way I will have the immediate opportunity to integrate what I learn to a solid portfolio. Overall, I am prepared to contribute my background and enthusiasm for PR to Weber Shandwick and know that by joining your team I can execute my skills and knowledge in the best way possible. As I engaged myself more in the practice of communications through internships and class projects, I gained more insight about the industry and practices available.
