Multiple Intellingences
The traditional notion of being smart and intelligent is to have a high IQ. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner challenged the accepted notion of being smart. He suggested that it was far too limited. Howard Gardner is a professor of education at Harvard University. He suggests that there 8 different types of smart, making the 8 multiple intelligences(Armstrong). Those multiple intelligences are linguistic intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and naturalistic intelligence. Originally there were only seven, but later naturalistic intelligence was added. According to Dr. Thomas Armstrong the essence of this theory is being able to respect the differences among different people, appreciating all the ways that people can learn, looking at alternative modes of assessment, and individualizing approaches to instruction. The uses are visualization, graphic representation and spatial matrix. The statements used in the assessment for interpersonal intelligence are: "People tend to come to you for advice, I am a social butterfly, I have several close friends, and that I communicate well and can help resolve disputes"(Armstrong). This quote is truly an inspiration to parents, teachers, educators and anyone else that believes that the multiple intelligences are crucial in the learning process. Linguistic intelligence is considered to be "word smart"(Armstrong). The statements for this category are: "I need to physically handle something to fully understand it, my most enjoyable class was physical education and handicrafts, and I need to tackle a new learning experience hands on rather than watching a video or reading a manual"(Armstrong). Students would take turns being each part so they could get the full effect. This means smartness demonstrated through sensitivity to patterns, relationships, and prepositional functions. This seems to be the easiest to teach, since most of the traditional teaching styles deal with being linguistic. Then they could paste them all on a bigger piece of poster board. Logical-mathematical is considered to be "number/reasoning smart"(Armstrong). Many say that students learn well when they are taught a song, because it is catchy and easy to remember. Their main uses are collaborations discriminate many kinds of interpersonal cues. The multiple intelligences are great for children to learn, and great for adults to examine their lives. Teachers can improve their teaching habits and way of learning to better suit the needs of their students. They demonstrate their smartness through classifications, discriminations, and sensitivity to natural phenomena.
