Gender roles and language

Gender roles begin from the time we are born. Language,Ûnot only encompasses the words we use but how we use them andÛthe styles we use them in, and all to often the language weÛuse is taken for granted. The language we speak and how we useÛand express it, shapes our culture and therefore helps us toÛdistinguish what is considered feminine and masculine. The wordÛhistory, has a connotation of being male, it's his story notÛhers or something neutral. We also use phrases such as "mankind,"Ûthe "evolution of man" and "man-made," all these, focus on theÛmale aspects of words rather then the female aspects or somethingÛunisex. In a marriage rite we pronounce the couple man and wifeÛas if she were a possession rather than a person. English, theÛstyle in which it's spoken and how we express it, is hostileÛto the female race. Occupational titles often don't include one sex or theÛother. Doctors, astronauts, attorneys, fire fighters, policeÛofficers, entrepreneurs, mechanics, judges, and Presidents areÛall presumably male unless the word female is place in frontÛof them. Stewardesses, secretaries, nurses, teachers,Ûreceptionists, and baby sitters are all connotations of femaleÛprofessions unless the word male is placed in front of

. . .

A more subtle distinction are the words used to describeÛpersonality. "ÛLady is used as a euphemism for the word woman which impliesÛsexuality while lady is more a term that's desexed. In conversations with friends or business associates menÛwill interrupt the conversation if they just arrived or theyÛÚ will interrupt when they think what you're saying is wrong. Women are used harshly by language but they are not allowedÛto use harsh language. ˜x „ ˜ Women are addressed differently than men; they are addressedÛaccording to whether they fit in or not. Their demeanor is often moreÛformal then that of a man. Û Once we focus on what exactly the words we say mean or what_images they portray then we will see just how great a roleÛlanguage plays in how the sexes are perceived and just howÛdangerous words can really be. The terms used for the women are demeaning. WomenÛtend not to be as forceful as men. They engage in eye contactÛmore and for longer periods as well as smiling, and touching_when talking with another person. As anyone can plainly see the nonverbal and verbal languageÛwe use shows us why many of the gender roles are unequal LanÜguage needs to be changed to equate the sexes rather thanÛcontinue negative gender roles. ÛÚ The other sexual terms to describe a woman are often degradingÛas opposed to those of a man.
