Alcohol and it's effects

Alcoholism is A disorder characterized by the excessive consumption of and dependence on alcoholic beverages, leading to physical and psychological harm and impaired social and vocational functioning. For those who didn't know, alcoholism is a disease. Like other diseases it is chronic, meaning that it lasts a person's lifetime and can possibly come back unless the person stays away from alcohol for good. Substance abuse affects thousands of people everyday and some don't even know that they have a problem.Do you have a problem with alcohol? Some symptoms of alcoholism are cravings or a strong need to drink. Also a loss of control or inability to limit ones drinking at an occasion. Another symptom would be physical dependence. Do you have withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea sweating, shakiness, and anxiety? (Hyde, 121) These occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Finally, tolerance, do you have to drink in greater quantities of alcohol to "get high"?There are some signs you can look for if you have a suspicion that you are somebody who is drinking too heavily. Such as these: Have you ever felt that you need to cut down on drinking? Have people annoyed you by criticizing that you drink too m

Some older people also have medications that may limit the amount of alcohol they may consume or they may not be able to drink at all. Many national and local resources can help with alcohol abuse. Finally, the most obvious, people under the age of 21, the legal drinking age in the United States. That is why although there are no medical reasons older men and women should limit themselves to how much they drink. It has also been linked to the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, age-related vision loss, certain kinds of cancer, ulcers, mental deterioration, and other ailments. However, it is better to not wait for them to hit "rock bottom" before you act. So when can't you drink? When a woman is pregnant or trying to become pregnant; people who plan to drive or take part in an activity that involves a sense of alertness and skill; and people taking certain over-the-counter drugs that warn you about drinking while on the medication should not drink because of the reaction between the medication and the alcohol. Medical problems seem to progress more rapidly, such as brain, heart, and liver damage in women than in men. Alcohol abuse affects people of different race, gender, nationality and social status. Physical changes can also make an older person feel "high" after only a small amount of alcohol. Many people are exposed to alcohol while still in their mother's womb, because she's been drinking. Research shows that 14 million people or one in every thirteen adults in the United States have abused alcohol or are alcoholics. There is currently no cure at this time for alcoholism but it can be treated. In 1987, 64 percent of all reported child abuse and neglect cases in New York City were associated with parental alcohol abuse. In addition, alcohol abuse takes a heavier toll on a woman than a man.
