Thoreau and "Walden Pond"

             Walden Pond is the autobiographical, non-fiction recount of Thoreau's stay at Walden Pond. Every event is factual rather than created or imagined.It is simply comprised of Thoreau's events and actions of his two years living in the woods. Thoreau feels society has strayed too far from the pusuit of excellence and purity. Thoreau claims that mankind has become too ambitious and greedy, enslaved by his own desire to own and posses. Thoreau moves into the woods, where he builds a small cabin. Thoreau grows a garden and lives off what he can produce or capture. Thoreau is mostly isolated from other people except for the occasional visitor. He spends his time observing nature and contemplating the nature of man and the universe. Thoreau also reflects on the similarties and diiferences between nature and society. Thoreau hopes society will purify itself. It takes place between 1845 and 1847.
             The main them in Walden Pond is self-relization and self-fullfillment. Slef actualilzation is accomplished through the human unity with nature.
             Walden pond has 18 chapters that cover three basic parts
             Part 1- Mostly in the first chapter economy
             Thoreau defines what he sees as a major problem of the time; how work and the aqusition of material goods can consume your life. Thoreau states "when I came to die,discover that I have not lived." Thoreau did not want this to happen to him.
             Part 2- Takes place in the first chapter "economy," the second chapter "where I lived, and what I lived for" and the seventh chapter "the bean field"
             Thoreau Describes his own experiment in living the simple life. Thoreau does not recommend living this specific lifestyle but Thoreau does make an effort to test his ideas and follow his own advice.
             This part contains Thoreau's reward for having focused on whats really important. In Thoreau's case it is mostly nature.
