Theodore Roosevelt and Interna

First actions like the Treaty of Wanghia with China and the Treaty of Kanagawa with Japan marked the turnaround of the nation’s policy to stay away from other countries’ affairs. George Washington’s famous words “avoidance of entangling alliances” were forgotten. More than one hundred years after Washington’s presidency, a Civil War, and issues and wars with Britain and other European powers, the United States finally had fixed major issues within the country e.g. the controversies between the North and the South, and were eventually strong enough as a nation to intervene in foreign affairs. Theodore Roosevelt who took over presidency in 1901 achieved major accomplishments for the U.S. by developing a strong foreign policy that differed from the policies of other world powers, and using the potential that the country had, to make it stronger than it ever was. Although criticizers accused Roosevelt of imperialism, the only purpose of the Alaskan Boundary Dispute, Roosevelt Corollary, and Panama Canal was to turn the United States – not into a colonialist – but into the dominant power in its hemisphere.

Before Roosevelt was able to show his capabilities in foreign affairs, he made himself known as the “trustbuster,” supported the

. . .
Unfortunately, the Colombian Senate did not accept the treaty, wanting more than the $10 million that were initially offered by the United States. The Building of the Panama Canal was probably one of the most important moves in U. That incident proved Roosevelt’s Corollary and removed European influence in North and South America, which is exactly what Roosevelt wanted. the right to build the canal on a 10-mile strip of land and Panama would receive $10 million in exchange. Roosevelt used the collected money there to pay back the debts and support the Santo Domingo Government (McDonald 75). He also emphasized that his intention was not acquiring colonies, it was rather assisting struggling countries in the neighborhood of the United States and giving them the possibility to become a partner of a strong nation, the United States of America.

Although criticizers accused Roosevelt of imperialism, he just made the right moves at the right time to make the United States stronger and capable to be a world power. Luckily for the American relation with Great Britain, Roosevelt took his threat back and saved the warming friendship with the former colonial enemy and went along with it. James Monroe, President of the United States from 1816 to 1824, spelled out his Monroe Doctrine in 1823, “Europeans were not to interfere in the affairs of the western hemisphere. He made it clear to European powers that the United States is a strong and responsible nation that can deal with issues occurring in countries in their neighborhood. The British who were very concerned about Roosevelt’s actions offered arbitration which Roosevelt accepted. Roosevelt recognized that America would loose a large area of territory and so he threatened Canada to go to war with them. In 1903, the tribunal settled the situation in US’ favor. Roosevelt was furious; he had no respect for the Colombian politicians at all.
