W. S. Maugham
Somerset Maugham lived a long time, almost one hundred years. He lived to see the collapse of the great colonial empires, the rise of America, and to fly in an airplane. He seems to have taken it all in with his usual apathetic character. W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris as the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy. French was his first language. At the age of 10 Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitestable. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University in Germany. He then six years of medicine in London. In 1897, he finally became a doctor and graduated from St. Thomas' medical school. After the success of his first novels and plays, he abandoned medicine, however he diligently put as much effort into writing as he had medicine. He never owned a typewriter so he wrote everything by hand. Eventually, he developed a habit of writing for four hours every morning.
