Flandreau, South Dakota

In the southeastern corner of the State of South Dakota, 40 miles north of Sioux Falls and about 12 miles west of the Minnesota border, lies an interesting territory known as Moody County. It is comprised of the county seat city of Flandreau, several smaller towns, a Santee Sioux Native American reservation, and many scattered farms. A major tributary of the Missouri River, the Big Sioux, meanders through the area as well, helping to make the district even more unique. The lifestyle is just as varied, from the Native American proprietors of the Royal River Casino, to the Flandreau citizens who daily commute to Sioux Falls, to the farmers who continue to adjust annually to the ever-changing face of present-day agriculture. By 1997 the number of farmers planting soybeans had risen to a staggering 396, planting a total of 94,987 acres of soybeans. Farther downstream, however, the soil along the river becomes what is known as the "DavisEnetBon association," which is well to moderately well drained, with loam, rather than silt, on the flood plains.
