Honest Abe
After reading the book ?Lincoln?, I can see exactly why Abraham Lincoln is known as ?Honest Abe?. Basically saying Lincoln was still your typical politician because he would still tend to beat around the bush on many touchy subjects, but always seems to get to the point and make his point very valid. It was said that Lincoln wrote a lot of his own speeches that he was known greatly for and, in fact, many listeners of Lincoln?s speeches had to wait for him to warm up and it was at this time when he caught the spectator?s spirits on fire. Another crucial fact is that Lincoln was a great lover of the works by Shakespeare and he even liked to useful portions of works such as Julius Caesar and Macbeth. ?We can not escape history. We of this congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.? Quoted Lincoln (Lincoln pg. xxiv). Lincoln was also known to be a devout Christian and he use words like ?Almighty? in his speeches. In Lincoln?s letters to Mary S. Owens it seems as if he is writing letters to a woman . . .
This issue can be seen in articles, such as, the speech on the Kansas-Nebraska act at Peoria, Illinois, the speech on the Dred Scott Decision at Springfield, Illinois, and the first inaugural address. Lincoln basically goes onto say that if elected he will be governed by the people that helped him to get elected. Next is the issue of slavery brought up in Lincoln?s first inaugural address and not only the issue of slavery was brought up, but also the issue of the uneasy tension between the North and the South. He did everything with the utmost grace and ease. I believe that the basic gesture of this address is that there is an issue of morally good and morally bad actions and the when the latter strikes in accord is when the government should step in to stop it. These are important because it shows his first political standpoint and view in his political subject. He made amazing speeches and believe this came from experience and from his background in the Bible and Literary works, such as Shakespeare. He did this because in an earlier article the reader asked the candidates to ?show their hands?. The next issue comes into play during the address to the Young Men?s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois. In the letters he is telling Mary the happenings of Springfield, which is where he is at and is telling her that if she wants to come there then she can but says that she would not be satisfied because she would not be used to living in a back woods area like he is in. Also, in a letter to the editor of the Sangamo Journal he writes on why he is basically the best candidate and representative of the people. In closing I believe that Lincoln was a very smart man when it came to being politician.
