A Look at Blindsight

Blindsight was first discovered in 1973 and has baffled the people who study it every since. Blindsight is the ability for blind people to detect visually the location of an object, even when they can't see it. In these few selections of studies we might be able to get a better understanding of this very strange and baffling thing. In the first look at blindsight Kelli Whitlock's "The mind's eye" he gives a good description of what blindsight is. He says that forty percent of the brain processes visual information and goes through a complicated task which we call vision. Then he goes on to talk about the history of blindsight and says that is was widely disputed until twenty-five years ago. The most modern test are of patients sitting in front of a large screen and lights were flashed. The patients were able to point out where the lights were. In other modern test a stick was held in front of their faces and asked if they were held horizontally or vertically. Amazingly they could guess correctly with consistency. Kelli Whitlock also believes that blindsight may one day be able to teach to blind people. He thinks if we can find a way to move it from subconscious to conscious thought than it can be

Another study I looked at was "Do Normal subjects show blingsight When They Attempt to Point to the location of Backwasrd-Masked Visual Targets" by M. The red light was used a a central fixation point and stayed there. References The Minds Eye, Whitlock, Kelly, http://www. Stimulations were followed by a sound warning. They were then told to press a key as quickly as possible with there non-paretic hand. The patients sat in an adjustable chair with their heads restrained by chin and forehead fifty-seven cm in front of a black platform. A camere was used to detect the way in which the eye was moving. Some of the patients that it was tested on had visual problems, and some did not.
