mafia

Over the past month, as I have been going to work with Sgt. Blake Gilmore, there has been much talk about organized crime ever since the second in charge, the underboss, Al Bruno was shot. It was a big story and every time I go into his office, something new is said about the case even though it was handed over to the FBI. In light of this, I have decided to write about the history and development of organized crime. It has always been of interest to me and it hits home in some ways because of my Italian decent. Throughout history, crime has existed in many different forms and has been committed by not only individuals, but by groups as well. Crime is something that knows no boundaries; it exists in all cultures, is committed by all races, and has existed in all time periods. Crime exists as a part of the economic institution and is a lifestyle for many people. Crime also exists in both organized and unorganized forms. Since the early 1900's, "organized" crime has existed in the United States. The origin of the word mafia is a bit of a mystery. Some say that it is derived from an Arabic word for refuge, while others say that it is derived from a Sicilian adjective implying courage

The Mafia did not take time to think about and plan the drug business carefully, and therefore they did not pay a lot of attention to the details of remaining secret. The American Mafia has undergone many changes. Drugs also caused a new form of greed in the ranks of La Cosa Nostra, which ended up hurting the Mafia. It was no longer a tiny portion of men that were from strictly Sicily but rather it became a part of all Italians. At a table in the basement sits the boss, underboss, consigliere, and some capos of the family. To help make up for their sense of moral insecurity, the cops demanded more money. After drugs were introduced, however, it became more common for the head of a family to be arrested, and even convicted because nobody would protect him from the drug charges. People like Colombians, African Americans, and other non-Italian people who were never involved in La Cosa Nostra before the drugs, began to take part in the Outfit and its activities. It was not like someone could fill out an application and wait to hear from one of the Dons. Since they gave the person the drugs, which made them commit a crime, La Cosa Nostra was unfairly blamed. In the 1930's and the period before drugs, bosses were rarely arrested. Although there was a new concern for cracking down on the Mafia, there were still cops on the pay roll that would not bother them, but drugs made the cops want more money to ignore them. For years under his rule, the farmers, the workers, and just the ordinary people of Sicily were treated very unfairly and they decided that this was not the way to live. These two families were the Genovese and the Gambino family. This was the biggest Mafia case in US government history, and sent the most people away at once.
