The opening of a story with reference to
The opening of a story plays a significant role in introducing the ideas and issues that are addressed in a story. 'We all fall down' by Robert Cormier is no exception to this. The opening of Cormier's book introduces the issues of deception, destruction and the idea that an event can affect every person differently. It is these ideas and issues that play an important role in the story. The issue of deception is present throughout 'we all fall down'. The first time the reader acknowledges the idea of deception is when the avenger is describing his supposedly requited relationship with the Jerome's. The reader believes the avenger to be 'like a son and brother' to the family. This incorrect idea only lasts a short while as the reader begins to question why, if he is such a significant part of the family, the avenger watched while the Jerome's house was being destroyed. The reader is introduced to the character Mickey Stallings, or Mickey Loony as he has been named by the children in the community, and they believe him to be just a 'neighborhood handy man' even if he is a little 'loony'. Not only are the other characters in the book lead to believe this but the reader is also. This idea is retained by both the reader and the c
Deception is introduced to the reader by the character the avenger/Mickey Stallings and his relationship with the Jerome's. Buddy's reaction to the way Harry Flowers and his gang treat Karen Jerome, 'he closed his eyes against the sound of her falling. This is dramatic irony until Buddy's part is the trashing comes to Jane's attention and his dishonesty is revealed. The audience only remains deceived for a short period of time in the opening of the story. The damage the trashers inflict on the house itself introduces the issue of psychical destruction while buddy's reactions throughout the trashing reveal the issue of psychological destructionThe idea that an event can affect every person differently is revealed to the audience through the characters reactions to the trashing. ' The way Buddy ignores what is happening to Karen reveals to the reader how buddy is affected by the trashing. Harry Flowers enforces this when he asks a buddy who is 'still recoiling from the events at the house they'd wrecked' the question 'we all fall down, don't we?'Throughout the story destruction of both a physical and psychological nature are present. The idea that every person reacts differently to an even is introduced by Cormier through the characters reaction to the trashing in the opening of the story. The issue of psychical destruction and as a byproduct psychological destruction is introduced to the audience in the very opening of the book through the trashing of the Jerome's house. Buddy leads Jane to believe that he is her savior of sorts because he helps her through all the problems the trashing caused. This issue is evident in the remainder of the book when Buddy begins his relationship with Jane. The issue of destruction is introduced in 'we all fall down' before the reader has opened the book. This issue of physical destruction introduced to the reader by the trashing of the Jerome's house itself, and the psychological destruction is introduced through Buddy Walkers reaction to the trashing. ' while The avenger reacts to the trashing with the idea of revenge, buddy walker feels immense guilt and begins to isolate himself through alcoholism. This idea is further built upon when the deeper feelings of the characters in regard to the trashing are explored.
