Transport in Paris
Paris has suffered from serious congestion and pollution problems in the past due to the sheer volume of traffic within the city centre. Many different policies and projects have been introduced to try and battle some of these problems and find a solution which will suit the French public yet still effectively reduce the amount of cars on the road and hence improving the environment through this. All world cities face similar problems of congestion and overcrowding. Renovating and expanding public transport services require new ways of thinking about how to finance them and how to engage local people in their development. As an historic and dynamic world city with a population of over 2 million, Paris faces many challenges in delivering quick, efficient and economically priced transport for all its citizens. In central Paris the automobile plays a significant role, on the 20 mile long inner belt freeway, called Boulevard Peripherique, traffic is extremely heavy, with almost 2 million motorists using it everyday, not counting vans and trucks. pdf This graph is taken from the National Transport Survey for France and we can see that that number of passengers travelling on the public rail service has increased, but not by a large amount and from the results, which unfortunately only reach to the end of 2003 when this survey was completed, the levels have not risen dramatically through 2003 so the number may not increase. How Paris has Adapted its Measures Along with EU Policy So how do the methods set up in Pars to solve the traffic congestion coincide with the regulations set out in the White Paper? This proves that the government is taking the issue of traffic control seriously and is implementing policies on transport in line with the Green Paper and EU policy.
