In Bend It Like Beckham, we see this Indian girl, named Jesminder Bhamra who try hard to meet the expectation of the parents, as well as the society way of thinking of a girl, especially an Indian girl. For that expectation, she must reconsider her enthusiasm of being a footballer. A girl becoming a footballer is considered strange, yet improper, especially for an Indian girl. Jess decides to lie to her parents of his presence as an indispensible squad in Hounslow Harriers. She becomes a great inspirarion for the team as a right winger. Although she tries to struggle from the oppression from the parents by lying, she can't deny her being submissive. It is true by lying she can play in the team as well as fullfil the parents' expectation of a ideal girl. However, lying is the minor thing she can do. She cannot fight the 'system' in vulgar. We believe that lying is her way to 'fight' the oppression. This act of lying reminds us of Pope Joan, who are considere


We see that finally Jess tries to be peacemaker. We see the similarities of both women, Jess, and Joan. She wants to go to the land of dream, America to fullfil her dream. This kind of oppression was experienced by Joan. She even successfully was chosen as a Pope. Women was regarded as 'imperfect men' in that era since their existence was oppressed by false rules. However, this act will njot enable her to gain what see wants. Only men who are allowed to study, even women are not allowed to go to the libraries. The thought about 'women are weaker than men' affected the society treatment against women. She then just give in all her desire and dream just for the sake of the family. They choose to struggle from the oppression by deceiving the system; and that's the only thing they can do. Both Jig and Jess choose to be a peacemaker in their problems, which means that they choose to submits to whatever it is to clear everything up.
