The Good War
The Good War, An Oral History of World War II, by Studs Turkel, is a compiliation of multiple accounts from servivors, on their personal experiences of the war. Each person with a differnt storie to tell; allowing for a very vivid description of the war, from various differnt perspectives, and points of view. In General, those who where not against the war from the beginning, found that the war had a significant and usually, suprisingly positive effect on them, and the rest of their lives. For the most part, those who went off to war, after the war, came back with a positeive outlook. Most of the American solders atlest, beleived that the war was either a major turning point in their life, was an exiting adventure, or tought them some kind of moral lesson that they carried with them throughout the rest of their life. What I find ironic is the fact that despite all the death and carnage that they were forced to view, that the majority of them were able to come back and say that it was the best experience of their lives, or that they wouldn't trade their war experience, for any thing in the world. I find it strange that a war can be one of the greatest things to happen to one in his/her lifetime.
Especiallay at the end, when I saw the kids and the old men. Why shouldn't I take care of a sixteen-year-old kid that's been shot to pieces?" When one is a ble to realize that it is not the people in the war that they are fighting against, but the ideas behind it, then healing and peace may begin. Those who fought in World War II willingly signed up for the war knowing that they most likely wouldn't be coming back. Even those who didn't believe in fighting, still helped in the war effort, in some way. They were able to realize that it wasn't the individual Germans who they were fighting against, but the German empire, Hitler's Empire. They thought it was worth givng our lives, it was such a cause that people truely believed in it. men who did not go off to the war, either becuase they were concientious objecters, or becuase of other reasons, had a negative view on the war. He also Interviewed Woman who lived during the war era, Young men who did not fight in the war, as well as those from Germany and Japan. They were not forced into the army, like in the Vietnam war. This was a war, it had more then one side, its not just some comic book with good verses evil. Could I blame that ked for what his parents or the Nazi leaders die? It was a terrible mixed feeling. This, is what made World War II "The Good War," We actually had a reason to fight, we actually knew what we were fighting for, and for the most part, we though tit was worth fighting for. World War II could be viewed as a good war for a number of reasons.
