Maus II

             Many people agree that nice deeds among strangers are done daily, but there are very few people that are willing to step out of their comfort zone and risk their life in order help a complete stranger. In a society where everyone seems to fend for themselves, when it comes to the battle of surviving, there is surprisingly a handful of people that are willing to sacrifice their life to make a positive impact on other people's lives. Pay it Forward, a movie about people performing selfless acts, shows people helping complete strangers by doing something that the strangers cannot accomplish by themselves. The characters in the movie have their own problems to deal with, but their kindness shows as they put their own lives on hold and help someone who they see needs assistance. In Maus II, by Art Spiegelman, one of the characters could have easily played a role in the Pay it Forward movie as she puts her life in danger in order to help others. Although Mancie is a generous guard in the concentration camps, she is still consider a prisoner and has to face the burden of being killed along with the people she is watching over. Mancie is willing to use the little authority she has to help other prisoners by performing tasks that are out of the prisoner's reach. Mancie, a savior in Maus II that risks her life for the other prisoners, resembles a hero, a hero whose main goal is doing everything in her power to help others.
             Mancie selflessly uses her position at the concentration camps to help the prisoners any way she can. Mancie, to the eyes of the Germans, is still considered to be a Jew, but through personal connections she was able to become a guard for a small section of the camp. Given such a powerful position for a Jew, Mancie has the opportunity to make the prisoners suffer by having them satisfy her every need.
