Through The Eyes Of The Hunted
In the short story by Richard Connell "The Most Dangerous Game" the reader is introduced to two characters Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. In the story, both of these expert hunters are placed in the role of the hunter and the huntee throughout their exciting encounter. Although both men are accomplished hunters, when Rainsford and Zaroff face off against each other we see how their similarities are outnumbered by differences in their ideals and qualities. One difference between them is that Zaroff is a cold person. Zaroff has no problem with killing humans and he has no regret for doing it. He thinks that hunting humans is just like hunting animals. Whereas Sanger Rainsford sees it as "...cold-blooded murder..."(p.28) As the story progresses we see that Rainsford realizes what it is like to be the hunted. We aren't told, however, whether Zaroff realizes the same thing, and judging from the cold and mean way his character acts he does not learn this lesson. However this is not their only difference. Another difference is how determined each of the two men are. Throughout the story we see that Rainsford is a very determined person, as he never gives up. He kept working hard right
Without Rainsford's and Zaroff's idiosyncrasies and resemblances the story would not be as exciting as it is. 28) In his reply Rainsford is inferring that a human's life is more valuable than an animal's. From the very beginning of the story we are shown that Rainsford is a strong person when he swims for a large distance in the unforgiving ocean at night. All in all, the two characters are very different not only in their qualities but in their outlooks on life as well. In the story both of the characters are portrayed as very intelligent and cunning men. In the story both of the characters have their own unique outlook on life. 28) Rainsford replies in a hot manner "But they are men. The outlook of Rainsford is that "The world is made up of two classes- the hunters and the huntees. In the end if Zaroff had been more determined the outcome might have been different. However Zaroff sees it differently, he sees a human as just a more intelligent animal. The two men have a broad understanding of hunting and are amongst the most elite in the discipline, and to be such excellent hunters u must be smart and deceptive. Rainsford uses very quick thinking and was able to construct simple traps that slow Zaroff's hunting and allow him to escape death on more than one occasion.
