Blood, Tears and Folly

Blood Tears and Folly, by Len Deighton is then novel that I have chosen to read. The reason for myself choosing this is because of the blurb it reads ' This feast of a book is a cordon bleu performance' as stated by Piers Brendon of Mail on Sunday. To read this and not be intrigued as to what this means would be impossible. Another reason I admit was that it had pictures, this adds a lot to the book as his detailed explanations correspond with the diagrams and pictures. Despite its subtitle, this is not an 'objective look' at World War II. This book is full of opinions that are mainly one-sided viewed as a long argument, using very detailed analyses of weapons, events and personalities, to demonstrate that much of what is now taken for true about the war is false. Len Deighton does an excellent job in looking at nearly all aspects of the Second World War. One of its strongpoint is that he provides a lot of background in addressing the problems and events of the Second World War. In order to understand why the Battle of France was fought the way it was, he takes you back to the First World War, the lessons "learned, and events in the various armies between the war. To shed light on the Battle of Britai

This book seems to be more of an encyclopedia on the early part of WWII, there are no main characters and it is made up of true facts. I have just learnt that in writing this book the author used intelligence analyst to help in his research. I am now at the stage of the book where it is a bit much for me! There is way to many things I have not yet learnt and I can no longer relate to the book and it is becoming a bit drawn out. Not many people including myself until now, know that the battle of France was not simply a case of France raising the white flag--it was a huge fight with over a quarter million French combat casualties and thousands of German deaths. Included are many illustrations, maps, tables and 17 pages of photographs. Things I found to be so in lighting in the start have in the end made it a hard read. When the war ended Hitler got a job working as a spy for the German army. I can not imagine what it was like for people to live in time of such a fierce war with so many people hurt and for what? Freedom and peace that they had hoped would last forever. Part Four - The war in the air, is different from the other sections I have dread it is not different in it lay out he has changed his style or view on some thing I am unable to put my finger on it quite yet. There is no clear tone, there must be a key way to his writing that doesn't not let it slip but you start soon to feel how he is making you swing from one side of an opinion to another. " Although reading and hearing this about Len Deighton, criticized for being an "amateur" historian. The way that Len Deighton explains this using satire, exposing human weaknesses and in some way you fell sorry for the bad guy at this stage of my reading this is Hitler. I am nearly there, have you ever noticed when you read a book you try and imagine the state they are in the way they are living and how the decisions they made have shaped us as we are to day and our beliefs? There is a strong referral to religion and the way people and war is fought because of this or the need for power the right to own something Len Deighton buts a slightly humorous twist on this he make quite a powerful statement that if we all believe in a god and he is directing our path, how come there is this path? This profound statement to me seemed quite clever as to question a question that may never be answered! They way I see it and Len Deighton appears to share it is that we fight for the same thing, but why dose someone lose? The world wars impacted on everything and in this book it is easy to see why it is so think after reading it there is way too much information, facts and fiction! Deighton makes it easy to see both points of view. He had spent the last weeks of the war in hospital recovering from gas-blindness.
