Mines were developed to be capable of being dropped from aircraft. Even if they floated on the surface of the water, they could be placed in enemy harbours. Originally, contact mines were used which meant that the mine was to make contact with an object before it exploded. Boats, aircraft and submarines were all capable of laying mines. Eventually new technology was implemented where mines detonated before they came into contact with a ship. The mines were equipped with magnetic sensors with an adjustable sensitivity level. As ships passed by, they would go through the earth's magnetic field and concentrate it at that point. Mines would detect this effect and detonate. New methods are clearing mine fields involved using large electromagnets dragged behind ships and low-flying aircraft. This had minimal protection, therefore electrical cables were developed to be dragged behind ships, which passed a large current through the seawater. Guns played a vital role in battles during the Second World War. Machine guns were very prominent, and found in three categories; 1) light machine guns: they were generally used for offensive purposes against personnel and lightweight, therefore they could be carried by th
They could not be easily carried, but could fire large quantities of bullets for longer periods of time. Machine guns: These weapons were first used in the American Civil War to devastating effect. Germany was one of the first nations to develop new anti-aircraft weapons in World War II, including new rapid-fire guns for low and medium altitudes. 3) heavy machine guns: their primary use was anti-aircraft because of their good range and penetration. Invented by Americans, it is a short-range weapon with low accuracy, and one of the first WWII weapons to use launch rockets. For years, German scientists were developing the biggest artillery ever known. Planes: These were the new types of weapons use in advanced technological warfare. They transported 500 men in 1914; 250 taxis took the reserve troops to the Battle of Marne and thousands of lorries were used to transport troops to Verdun in 1916. It also blew the ground, which made hiding much more difficult. htmlNaval Aviation Chronology in World War IIWORLD WAR II 1940-1945Thirty years after the Navy had acquired its first airplane, and only 19 years after it had acquired its first aircraft carrier, naval aviation faced the supreme test of war. If it had not already been shown in combat before the United States entered the war, all doubts as to the potency of naval air power were removed by the infamous, yet skillfully executed attack on Pearl Harbor, when Japanese carrier aircraft in one swift stroke devastated our principal naval base in the Pacific and eliminated a major portion of the Navy's heavy surface power.
