Medea - Barbaric Revenge

Medea was the daughter of the King of Colchis and materially assisted Jason and his Argonauts in the theft from her father of the golden fleece, deterring paternal pursuit by chopping her brother into pieces and dropping them in the sea. In Corinth Jason sought to replace her by marrying the daughter of the King and she took revenge by sending a poisoned robe to the bride, which killed her, and murdering her own two sons by Jason, before taking her departure in a dragon-drawn chariot. Medea is a barbarian, even for her time, full of revenge. Revenge is one of the basic tools of the human instinct. Revenge is defined as harming someone in repayment for harm they have caused another, a loved one, or a group you are dedicated to. The theme of revenge in Medea is like saying "what goes around comes around." Medea's search for revenge commences after her husband, Jason, leaves her to gain power and prestige by marrying the daughter of the King of Corinth, Kreon. Medea becomes distraught over the news especially after she reflected upon all that she has destroyed for Jason. She felt lonely, with no fame or respect. The play creates a world in which there is no relation whatsoever between the powers th

Medea had a flaw that caused a mistake in her judgment and leads to her own downfall. It was Jason that made the decision. She tried to possess Jason's soul, but she possessed her own with horror and misery too. She made threatening comments about the new bride. it was his pride the lust of his new love. This was not the only time Jason had witnessed the horror of Medea's revenge. She is the one who will have to live with the painful memory of slaying her children with her own hands, not Jason. When Medea responds to Jason's comments, she even tells the audience of her vengeful attitude. But the disappointing thing about her is that she did a little too much. "could I, a wretched fugitive, have hit upon a greater stroke of luck than marriage to the daughter of the King?" (Medea, Episode2, ln161-163).
