Comets
Long ago comets were understood by people to be a sword or as a symbol for death, while others thought it was the appearance of the head of a woman with streaming hair which symbolizes mourning. Comets have been blamed for bizarre occurrences ever since Halley's Comet inspired terror in Europe during 1066. Over time, scientists have progressed in finding the actual composition and structure of a comet, when a certain comet will come around again, and exactly where the comet will be in the sky when it does appear. However, individual's ideas have remained the same on the topic throughout time. Just a few years ago Comet Hale-Bopp was said to have an object behind it with extraterrestrials aboard. This false information led to a cult sacrificing themselves in hopes of being picked up by the aliens. Still the one question remains, what would we do if a comet were to collide with Earth?"Comets are lumps of ice and dust that periodically come into the center of the solar system from somewhere in outer reaches" (Randy Russell, 2004). Due to the appearance of a comet astronomers
To get to know the orbit of individual comets one needs to specify the orientation of the orbital plane in space, the orientation of the orbit in this plane, the size and shape of the ellipse, and three observations of the position of the comet along the orbit. This observation can be confirmed by using Kepler's second law of motion which states that if "a planet moves along its elliptical path with a speed that changes in such a way that a line from the planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. Is a comet the reason the dinosaurs became extinct? This is a question that scientists may never be able to answer, however, there are some clues. The tail always points away from the Sun due to its solar wind and light being sent radially pushing the particles the opposite way. Comets are invisible unless they are near the Sun, this is due to the reaction with the solar wind which reflect light off the nucleus then creates two tails. Once in orbit the comets make there way around the Sun speeding up as it gets closer then slowing down as it moves away. By thoroughly searching the layers of sedimentary rock that give us our record of the late Cretaceous, they saw that the dinosaurs and their ecosystem were doing just fine until some kind of abrupt extinction event, such as a crashing comet. The closest near miss occurred on January 17, 1991 when Earth was just 106,000 miles from an asteroid that was 30 feet wide. In support of this view, SARS has reportedly been traced to Civet Cats, a delicacy eaten in Southern China. The ion tail can reach several hundred million km. This brightening effect was caused by debris from the comet that is eventually blown away by the Sun's radiation pressure following the disintegrated nucleus. These observations conclude that there are just as many comets revolving around the Sun in the same direction as the planets as there are comets revolving in the opposite direction. long and is composed of small dust particles driven off the nucleus by escaping gases. Most are trapped in a huge sphere beyond Pluto know as the "Oort Comet Cloud.
