Drugs and Adolescents

It is drug-free week at school again. Many activities are scheduled for the students as well as guest speakers that will reiterate the importance of remaining drug free. Guest speakers talk about their experiences with drugs and how they overcame their problems. This is a habitual event for students, and they do not pay much attention to these speakers and the advice that they give them. Little do they know that they will be faced with the same temptations that these people were faced with. Why do young people ignore the advice that others give them and find out the hard way? The author believes that young people ignore others' advice because they are full of pride, they want to fit in, and because they did not experience the pain themselves.Pride is a large problem for young people. The need for social attention can drive people to do crazy things. Also, they may disregard the advice because they have heard a similar story before. Peer pressure is the largest reason why young people ignore the advice of others. Probably the largest reason why young people disregard the advice given to them is peer pressure. This can range from anything from cheating on a test to smoking marijuana. Young people on the whole need to swallow their pride and except and use the advice given by their elders who have experienced situations similar to the temptations that young people are faced with today. Young people need to swallow their pride, refuse to give in to peer pressure, and realize that they will be faced with these problems. Peer pressure is a very dangerous thing can lead to trouble. After a while, a person will not listen carefully to something that they have heard over and over again. One sees instances everyday were children are pressured into doing things that they do not approve of. A child may say that they will never be tempted to take drugs. This social need also is what makes students drink because their friends are doing it. When a young person's friends want them to do something, not many people can persuade them to do otherwise. On Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, the third most important need that humans must fulfill is the social need.
