1960

             The 1960's was full of dramatic changes in the lives of Americans, from living in fear day to day for a week and a half in 1962 to an increase in recreational drug use, the attitude and outlook on life was affected. America was growing not only in population but in it's acceptance of different ways of life, religion and ideas.
             Population of the 1960's was up to 177,830,000. The unemployment was at 3,852,000. An estimated 850,000 "war babies", or children who were born at the time of World War 2, entered into college. Minimum wage was $1.00.
             The African American community saw a beginning to what was known as Black Power, in where instead of trying to conform to white America's views and culture they embraced their own; leaders such as Malcolm X not only supported but suggested that not only should blacks take pride in their selves, but completely separate themselves from white society. He was a minister in the Nation of Islam also known as the Black Muslims. His statements caused a large dispute and controversy which only fueled racial tensions when he made these statements, including one in which he expressed his views that he obeyed the law but strongly felt African Americans had the complete right to bear arms in self-defense and stated that if threatened they should all take up weapons to legally be conscious of their rights. His electrifying rhetoric made his voice heard and the hair stand up on your neck. He spoke with such rhyming phrases that demanded change and damned the genocide blacks were committing onto their selves, such as "Everybody everywhere is scratching for what they can get, did you think anybody in this town is any different? They don't give a damn who gets killed, just as long as the dice keep rolling, The hoes keep hoeing, and the money keeps flowing" and "Stealing runs rampant in Harlem, gambling runs rampant in Harlem, all types of evils and vices that ...
