She is really the outcome of a love affair between the Captain and their maid Johanne, but she thinks that Jakob is her father until the end of the play. She is very prideful for working in the Alving house and very well educated. Although she is attracted to Osvald she is very careful not to over step the boundary of what is proper.
Manders: Do you think that books like these make you feel any better? Any happier?.
