Management and Leadership: Are They Synonymous?Although good management is needed to help organizations meet current commitments, good leadership is also needed to move the organization into the future. "Most U.S. corporations today are over managed and under led." (Kotter103) Is there really a difference between being a manager and being a leader? If so, what are the differences and similarities? In order to see the big picture we must evaluate both styles and come to a conclusion.It has been said that there are several petals on the ever-growing stem of leadership. If all of the petal components are used wisely, a beautiful flower is created. Each petal is considered a form of leadership mastery, which if correctly utilized will form a beautiful flower and allow these qualities to blossom. Personal mastery is the first petal in the flower and deals with the inner voice. Listening to it, trusting it, and acting on it will allow a person to "be" their destiny. Whenever that "butterfly" feeling forms in the stomach, it's the inner voice trying to say something. I stressful times, it becomes critical to stop, count to ten and just relax. Think before action is taken. Do not second-guess yourself because generally the
Management focuses on establishing detailed plans and schedules for achieving certain results, then providing resources to accomplish the plan. The jobs need to be filled with qualified individuals who understand the direction of the company. Leadership, on the other hand, creates change, often to a dramatic degree. Leadership on the other hand, calls for creating a more efficient or innovative processes for the future vision. There are three areas of complexity and culture within a company that a manager must deal with on a daily basis. Leading by centering life is the ability to build resilience and to enhance effectiveness and fulfillment. If peers feel that they are being talked down to, for instance, this will cause friction within the workplace. Leadership instead is more concerned with communicating the vision and developing a shared culture and set of core values that can lead to the desired future state. The process of management generally encourages no emotional empathy, but leadership means you are emotionally connected to others. Much has been written in recent years about the difference between management and leadership. Leadership focuses on motivating and inspiring people to produce the goods or services. This essential trait can make or break a leader's effectiveness. If an outside company or client feels that they are being talked down to, then there will be a potential loss of business. The third phase in dealing with complexity is controlling and problem solving.
