The Aztecs

Aztecs The story of the Aztecs is a remarkable one. The Aztecs managed to form an Empire from a simple hunter-gatherer group. They were fierce warriors pragmatic builders, the Aztecs ruthlessly created an empire in the fifteenth century, an empire that was only surpassed in size by the Incas in Peru. The sacrificial aspect of their religion with its sense of brutality and indifference in human life, appalled and angered the Spaniards that would later conqueror them. Modern archeology continues to show the Aztecs had many achievements. Their achievements include, the formation of a highly specialized and stratified society and imperial administration; the expanding of a trading network as well as a tribute system; the development of a sophisticated agricultural economy, carefully adjusted to the land; and the development of an intellectual and religious outlook that was in intimate contact with the earth, sky, and seasons. The year round ceremonies and their art architecture opens the door to a profound civilization. On February 10 1519, a Spanish expedition of many vessels sailed to the Gulf of Mexico. Hernan Cortez was following a chartered voyage set out

Tula was where the Toltec empire was. The area was taken over in the 15th century by the Aztecs and reinvented. One of the most famous was the sun god "Quetzalcoatl. Later the accounts made by Cortez were of the leader Montecuhzoma's capture and death, the outbreak of battle between the two, and the Spaniards dramatic escape from Tenochtitlan by night. Cortez landed on the sandy dunes near were Veracruz in found. The first of which was Teotihuacan translated, "the place of reeds" oversized monuments constructed between the 1st and 8th centuries A. In the process of becoming a imperial city-state they inherited a great range of religious, economic, and social forms from past cultures. It also because of their violent encounters set in motion a new process, which profoundly and permanently changed the whole framework of existence. The medieval crusading mentality forced change on many people. It was 25 miles or so northeast of Tenochtitlan/Mexico City. The small Spanish force finally outnumbered the Aztecs using warriors from towns and villages where people oppressed by the Aztecs fought back. These sites according to Richard Townsend author of The Aztecs, "became the focus of mythic significance and legendary histories by means of which the Aztecs sought to establish themselves as heirs to the authority and prestige of a hallowed past. Luckily there were some who even back then began to compile extensive records. Although the missionaries were against it they were still very impressed with the sophisticated civilization and so its message remained on. There was a sense of feudalism in Tenochtitlan.
