Standardized Tests Commonly Used for AssessmentThe Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) Published in 1967 by David Wechsler, this test was designed for ages 4 to 6 1/2 and was a competitor of the Stanford-Binet. In 1989 the WPPSI was revised to test children 3 years of age to 7 years 3 months. About half of the original test items were retained and the artwork was improved. All forms of Wechsler's tests yield Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQ with five or six Performance and Verbal scales depending on which form is being used. The intelligence testing requires a trained clinical examiner and should be administered, scored, and interpreted by a trained professional who is a psychologist or psychiatrist, preferably. The test takes 60-90 minutes to administer and is used to evaluate cognitive abilities and intellectual abilities in children or adults, depending on which Wechsler test is used. The time limits vary throughout the test from 20 minutes for Vocabulary, Word Analysis, Reading Comprehension Session 2, and Mathematics Estimation for grades 3 and above. It is about an hour in length, reliability is satisfactory, and validity high. To take the test no previous knowledge of musical facts or history is required which makes it ideal for school age children. This test is for students from kindergarten through 8th grade and provides assessment of achievement in educational objectives such as; reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and information sources provide comprehensive information about student skills development plus their ability in critical thinking. There are some forms of the Iowa that test for ability to read maps, interpret graphs, work analysis, problem solving, work and study skills, computation, science, and social studies. The pitch test became the best known because its purpose it to see if one has a tin ear or if one can discriminate between two tones whose frequencies may be very close to each other.
