· If someone would pay us a penny for the number of ideas we came up for our global issues project, we would be millionaires today. Vihari's original idea was to help abused woman by setting up a support group, and I originally wanted to deal with art and somehow incorporating that into a charity. But as I said before, those were one of the many ideas we came up with. A friend of mine offered an idea, that I should do an AIDS awareness campaign in SAS because it was such a huge worldwide epidemic. Vihari was also drawn to the idea of holding a campaign based in SAS community, so we joined forces and started researching. But as we researched deeper into the AIDS issue, we realized that the major cause for the virus's spread was due to a lack of safe sex practices. Vihari and I were shocked at the rate at which AIDS was spreading around the world, and this epidemic was no longer something that we only heard about in news, but something that could undoubtedly affect our friends, family, and possibly ourselves. We live in a country, and study in a school that protects us from war, violence and poverty, and we are incredibly lucky to live in such an environment. However it's easy to forget the invisible dangers such as AIDS, or STD's
We want to promote sex education, abstinence, safe sex practices, knowledge about STD's, and that every single student is provided with some form of support and information. (TALK ABOUT THE RESULTS YOU HAVE GATHERED, SUCH AS, HOW MANY STUDENTS WANT A SEX ED CLASS, AND A SPEAKER. Such as the complexities of writing out a survey, it took over 7 rough drafts to finally gain approval for it being sent out by Dr Dewan and Mr Norcott. From this one can see that sex education is a vital part in educating a person, especially a SAS student who moves around from country to country. We found that each health class incorporated 2 weeks of sex education, but in these two weeks other issues were also discussed, such as drug abuse and family issues. (im lost right now Vihari on what to say, so add anything you want to this). However only 6 students per grade take that class per semester, which means that only 10-15 % of that class will graduate with exposure to the life skills course. And one has to face the reality that safe sex is an issue that needs a bigger emphasis on. The only class that had a slightly bigger emphasis on sex education was life skills. ETC)· From the data we have collected, we propose that there should be a health class that deals with the issues of STD's, AIDS, sex education and could incorporate other subjects such as raising ones self esteem, or perceived image, etc. · We have learnt many things from this project. We also examined the school's health curriculum, and looked through the curriculum's history and course outline. Being in a high school filled with 900 high school students, one cannot ignore the fact that many high schoolers' are sexually active, and could possibly not be aware about the risks they faced, if they did not practice safe sex. Recent studies have shown that in Uganda, due to the introduction of sex education by the government, HIV cases dropped by 70%.
